To my teaching colleagues
Some time ago a lady told me:
Now the teachers do not want to work, they are doing a strike to increase their salaries, as if they had a great job, anybody sits at a desk, opens a book and begins to dictate or copy on a blackboard.
I did not answer anything, I did not ignore his criticism, because I knew that one day I would have the opportunity to explain what it is really to be a teacher, and it was.
The following weeks she tells me:
Is your work like a pretty complicated Mrs. Maria?
To which I gladly replied:
I have the best job in the world, I have the best profession that any human being could have, to be a teacher is not just to open a book and dictate a content, to be a teacher is: to look every morning about forty students in a classroom , to know each one as an individual and at the same time as part of the group, is to know if the child slept well or not just by looking at it, is to worry about whether he ate or did not eat before coming to school, is knowing that everyone has a life completely different from the rest of the world and that in their environment there are polluting factors that worry, it is knowing how to recognize in an instant what type of tears are coming out of their eyes, whether they are sadness or joy, pride or fear, is to try to take a smile of triumph every day to help overcome stages, is to remember your childhood and think how beautiful and supposedly uncomplicated life was, is to see every hole in your shirt, pants, shoes or socks and have to A thread and needle to sew, is to have children with learning difficulties of different kinds, try to understand them and teach them all.
It is feeling anguish when a child falls, hits or breaks his little leg, is holding a bandage or alcohol, otherwise a hug and a word of encouragement, dry his tears and tell him to continue, that nothing happened ; is to breathe the cough or sneeze of a child who is sick and comes to you wanting to be pampered (consenting), is having to buy weekly lice ball because the girls hug you so much that it is impossible that a teacher has not is contaminated with these bugs, is to sit with each of them to check their heads and groom them, comb their hair, put them flirtatious, is teaching how to tie their braids, to accompany them to the bathroom when their tummy hurts, is to decipher a look.
It is when the heart screams that something is happening with a child that suddenly deteriorates in behavior and academically, it is the art of transmitting love and security through a hug.
The lady did not know what to tell me ...
A good teacher is the basis of a successful education and for this to be the case it is necessary to have a series of personal and professional skills. Because teaching is not only transferring knowledge, it is much more, it is about knowing how to create the necessary conditions for students to learn to think and build their own knowledge about the world around them.
A good teacher needs not only a wide knowledge of the subject that he teaches and a study plan; He needs to be enthusiastic, affectionate and empathetic but also firm and respectful, responsible, punctual, flexible and communicative. These among other characteristics make up the keys to be a good teacher.
A good teacher among the many skills that must develop must show first of all:
1. Empathy, to put yourself in the place of the student and understand their difficulties or concerns; understand him and help him overcome the obstacles that hold him back or to put the necessary challenges that allow him to go further.
2. Patience, to deal with both those students that cost a lot and those who always want more, to know how to wait for the slowest but also to adapt to those who end up too fast.
3. Delivery for your profession and for the work you do. The good teacher is concerned with transmitting and spreading the desire to excel that involves learning without caring about the number of students per class or the cognitive, cultural, social or economic differences that exist between them.
4. Enthusiasm for what he does, able to motivate his students and infect them with the desire to learn and know. An enthusiasm capable of reaching the student and causing him to awaken curiosity about his surroundings.
5. Creativity A good teacher must be able to be creative both in the way of attracting the attention of students and in the way of exposing their knowledge creating unique, captivating and dynamic lessons.
6. Flexibility In the face of a special situation or problem, you must be able to change and find the way for all students to understand the concept you are explaining. Change course and adapt to the needs of the class group.
7. Consistency in their decisions. A good teacher should know how to put rules and rules in his classroom coherent and consistent, should to exercise the authority that his position grants him without falling into authoritarianism, which would detract from his credibility and alienate his students. For example, if he does not allow his students to eat chewing gum, he should not either.
8. Humility. A good teacher, no matter how hard he tries, can not be infallible, as anyone can make mistakes. Being able to recognize them, admit them and apologize is a quality that will always play in favor of the teacher, increasing the confidence of the children in him, since they will see him as what he is, a human being.
9. Respect towards himself, towards his classmates and obviously towards his students and their respective parents. If there is something that teachers must take into account, they are a role model for each of the students, who observe them constantly as they act, how they speak, how they move, respond or dress.
10. Responsibility, since it works with a very sensitive material: children and precisely the training of their students is the most important job they have to do. That is why a responsible teacher arrives on time, prepares classes well, motivates his students, is creative and communicative, attentive and patient always looking for the best for all of them.
